This is a straight up scam. Food banks use money to buy food that doesn't sell for cents per can!! The stores use all donations for a tax write off, so if you buy it first they get free profit. DO NOT BUY AND DONATE THROUGH THE STORE. Donate whatever money directly to the food bank, or donate food items you bought and now don't want to eat but are still not expired.

I get it. These big corporations are a**holes. But, hear me out, despite what they are doing, is it not a good thing to donate to food banks? I mean, yes, what they are doing is wrong, and we should totally use our voices, votes, and wallets to change it. But why should their bad decisions change your good behavior? If you're already buying, regardless of what you think of that big corporation, why not go ahead and purchase that extra can for the shelter? Why punish the shelter for the corporation's bad decisions? Or if you're so upset about the whole thing, stop shopping there and donate your time and money to said shelter instead. Then, grow your own groceries, or shop local farmers markets, etc.

They shouldn't throw out expired food. Another thing that is annoying is I live in Central California, and farmers aren't allowed to give out their excess commodity but have to compost it because the produce or tree nuts "might" be contaminated. My late husband was an analytical chemist in the ag industry, and he was allowed to bring home what wasn't needed, and as a family, we could donate to the community college and universities because our kids attended.

Only way I'd find this acceptable is if they had a promotion where if you bought them and donated it they'd match your donation. Otherwise it's kind if scummy to try and get others to donate to charity while charging record prices and making record profits.

Grocery stores don’t make huge profits they operate with margins of 1%-2%. No other business in this country operates on margins that low. I have no problem grocery stores identifying food pantry items. It saves the waste of buying donations that won’t get used.

You donate and they get the charity tax deduction against their profits despite not having contributed, It is better if you donate and then get the receipt that gives you the tax deduction rather than Sobeys!

They need to do Anything it takes to sell overpriced items.... 1 Can of beans should not cost $2.79
